KIBERA FILM SCHOOL AT TEDx KIBERA

Today we were at Mchanganyiko Hall in Kibera for a TEDx forum. TEDx was holding its forum in Kibera for the third time. This time we partnered with them, which led to us covering the event. We also set up a table outside to welcome people to watch Togetherness Supreme, which we showed at the end of the forum presentations.
The hall holds a capacity of up to 100 people and when the movies started it was full to capacity.

We had each been delegated roles to make the day a success, which we all worked as a team.  It was a learning experience for us in the sense that we had to talk to the visitors and explain to them what the movie was all about; call it public relations.

HARVARD UNIVERSITY JUNIOR AT KIBERA FILM SCHOOL

Today on 13th August we had a class session with Aidan Shapiro-Leighton a junior at Harvard University studying filmmaking. Currently he is in Kibera working on a documentary project for the Kounkuey Design Initiative (KDI).

He shared with us more on video effects, filters and audio transitions.

Starting Monday 16th August we will join him during his video documenting at the KDI site to learn more on camera work and documentary shooting.
This is a positive initiative of exchanging ideas on filmmaking between US students and Kibera Film School students

TOGETEHERNESS SUPREME PREVIEW AT KENYA NATIONAL THEATRE

It was a grateful day at the Kenya National Theatre on Wednesday 11th August when Togetherness Supreme was previewed. Lola Kenya Screen organized the event. Togetherness Supreme had been entered for this year’s festival. Some of the cast, Jefferson Ong’ongo who played Otieno, Martha Kisaka who played Alice, Chrispine Onyango who played Masher were present. The audience was excited to meet them.
The previous day some films from the 2009 trainees were also previewed and the audience commended them for the creativity and content.
Some of the people present requested us to have more such films with great content for the Kenyan audience.
The occasion was filed with fun. We interacted with different people who were so much excited about Kibera Film School with some promising to pay us a visit.

TOGETHERNESS SUPREME PREVIEWED AT KABETE CHILDREN’S REMAND CENTER

Kevin Machimbo, Wilfred Masea and John Ngaruiya took Togetherness Supreme to a children’s remand center in Kabete.
The center rehabilitates children from the age of 8 to 16. As part of the ongoing movie previews, Host Sun Film together with Kibera Film School collaborated with the school administration to showcase the movie to the young children.
“I recommend this movie to be taken to most schools so that we can avoid some of the things that happened during the post election violence” Njau (14 year old  student at the center)

VICTOR AND GABRIELA SELECTED FOR THE ANNUAL MAISHA LAB TECHNICAL WORKSHOP IN UGANDA

Gabriela Operre
Victor Oluoch

The annual Maisha Lab technical workshop took place in Kampala Uganda this year. The workshop welcomed applications from Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania.
Gabriella Operre and Victor Oluoch from Kibera Film School applied for the Editing department. They were selected from among several applicants. Gabriela stood out to be the only lady to be selected for the editing department.
This is the second time a person from the school is taking part in the workshop. Last year 2009 Faith Wavinya then a trainee managed to be one of the few participants to be taken for script.
For Victor and Gabriella this is an opportunity to explore more in filmmaking, for the school this surely shows that the youth from Kibera can have their talent and skills developed to become filmmakers that have an audience.
Congratulations to Victor and Gabriela and thanks to Kibera Film school.
